In the early years of 1900’s hypnotism and stage shows became quite popular. A showman called "Hart, the Laugh King," staged a show at the Hopkinsville Opera House. Although Hart was not a therapist yet he had some experiences with hypnosis. He offered to help Edgar through hypnosis. He hypnotized Edgar and told him that he would be able to speak. Edgar surprised everyone by answering his questions in his original voice. He, however, refused to take the post-hypnotic suggestion and laryngitis returned when he woke up. The experiment was repeated many times. He would speak when he was in trance but would lose his voice when he woke up. People were convinced that Hypnotism could somehow cure Edgar.
